The American girl doll has been abundant in American culture for 40 years. The American girl doll, its accessories and clothes are not made in America. These dolls have represented with young girls especially, the American ideal like the Barbie before. We were given 15 dolls and accessories from parents who have many now grown daughters. We came up with the idea of using these iconic American dolls for scenes in a political form. Using the dolls clothes and accessories we balance it out with masks and printed backgrounds.
We photograph these set up scenes with an 11” x 14” camera. These cameras take sheet film at each piece being 14” x 11”. This gives the scenes a very unique look. We are using these scenes to express contemporary ideas.
